Road Rage and inconsiderate driving seems to be on the increase. If we make an error on the road, some suggest we carry a "sorry sign" to hold as way of apology - to defuse the situation and prevent escalation of anger. Do you think this would help?
According to recent research, women are more likely to be overworked than men, even though men work longer hours. The crucial difference may be that women report that their jobs more often require mutli-tasking much more often than is the case with men. When women and men with equal multi-tasking jobs were compared, gender differences disappeared, suggesting that more multi-tasking may explain the greater liklihood for women to be overworked.

In a word, the answer may be "yes." In a recent study in Sweden, it was found that an intense impending high-pressure deadline icnreased the risk of a heart attack within the next 24 hours by a factor of six in men and three in women.
Original study in J. Epidemiol. Community Health, Jan 2005; 59:23 - 30. Study summarized and reported in The Newsletter of The American Institute of Stress.
According to new data from the American Institute of Stress, many people who have paid vacations coming do not take their full time. In fact, one study concluded that "Americans are the most vacation-starved people in the industrialized world." In fact, statistics from the World Tourism organization list the following average annual vacation days for various countries: Italy (42), France (37), Germany (35), Brazil (34), Britain (28), Canada (26), South Korea (25), Japan (25), with the U. S. being last at 13.
Yet, vacations are good for your health. The famed Framingham Heart Study data of women aged 45-64 showed that frequent vacations cut risk of death among all women by half. Another study from the State University of New York at Oswego published in 2000 foud that regular vacations lowered risk of death by almost 20% in 35-37 year-old men.

Dr. Bruce Sharkin of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, an expert on road rage, estimated in a recent study that 400 billion "hostile exchanges" between motorists take place in the United States every year. Road rage results in thousands of car-crash injuries and hundreds of deaths, but no agency yet counts them.
"Clearly, road rage has become a significant public health concern, and in many ways, a mental health concern as well," he wrote in a recent study published in the Journal of Counseling and Development. "Driving behaviors such as tailgating, cutting someone off, making obscene gestures and flashing one's headlights are becoming more and more commonplace in everyday driving situations"

Feeling tired at work? If so, you are not alone. Studies show that Americans are working longer hours, take fewer vacations, and have less leisure time to unwind. In fact, 44% of U.S. employees felt overworked "often" or "very often." How does feeling overworked affect job performance? In one study, overworked persons were more likely to make mistakes at work, feel angry at their employers for expecting them to do so much, resent coworkers who didn't work as hard as they did, have higher stress levels, be depressed or have health problems, and be neglectful with respect to caring for themselves.
Further studies have fouhd that the feeling of being overworked often stemmed from an inability to complete an assignment because of having to work on too many tasks at the same time and/or frequent interruptions.

In his new book, "A Whole New Mind, " Daniel Pink argues that "empathy" is one of the six essential aptitudes it will take for individuals and organizations to survive in the future - in the "information age."
Empathy is part of "emotional intelligence"- a concept developed by psychologist Daniel Goleman to predict success and happiness in both business and personal life.
At Century Anger Management, we teach "empathy" as one of the 8 core tools of anger and stress control. (Click here for a list of the eight tools.). To download our new e-book with exercises on effective ways to develop empathy, click here.
Malcolm Gladwell, in his new best-seller book "Blink," sites the marital research of John Gottman showing that for a marriage to survive, the ratio of positive to negative emotion in a given encounter has to be at least five to one. I (Tony Fiore, Ph.D.) studied recently with the Gottman Institute in Seattle, and can attest to the validity of this marital truth: Few marriages can survive more negativity (like anger or contempt) than positivity for very long. For relationships to have a chance, a couple must find a way to increase their positive interactions or least interprete problems or issues in a more positive way. All couples have problems and issues; what separates successful from unsuccessful couples is ability to repair the emotional damage done during conflicts.
On May 10, 1986, 21 year old Joe Vomvulakis was gunned down in the process of beinfg a Good Samaritan. His brother, Chris, has struggled all these years with trying to forgive his murderer. He says: " Every spiritual tradition, every psychology, every how-to, self-help book, all of them in some way talk about how the energy of forgiveness is healthy, how it is good for you, how it is a good habit. All things considered, there is no downside to forgiveness. In fact, what it does is it creates a new infinite quantum field of possibility in us because it releases the energy of resentment we were holding on to. Some people talk about how forgiveness energy creates in us the potential to be more prosperous. To me, forgiveness is not about forgiving Ken Luther for murdering my brother, but rather it is retaining the wisdom of what I learned through the experience and taking steps at the same time to release the pain that is associated with it."
